Do voice messages stay forever?
Not on their own. Where each kind can disappear:

So the first step is always the same: get it out of the app, as a file of its own.
Save it from the app it is in
App menus move a little between versions. If a step does not match your screen exactly, look for Share, Save or Export on the message.
iPhone voicemail
- Open Phone → Voicemail and tap the message. (In the Phone app’s newer unified layout, voicemails sit in the calls list — filter it to voicemail.)
- Tap the share button and choose Save to Files — or AirDrop it to a Mac, or email it to yourself.
It is saved as an .m4a audio file. Do it soon: until you do, the message lives on your carrier’s servers, not your phone.
Android voicemail
- Open the Phone app’s voicemail (or your carrier’s visual voicemail app) and tap the message.
- Tap Share or the menu, and save it to Files or Google Drive.
What you see depends on the phone and the carrier. If there is no share option at all, ask your carrier how to export a message — before closing the line.
Google Voice
On a computer, open voice.google.com, go to Voicemail, open the message’s menu and choose Download.
iMessage audio messages
- Tap Keep under the message so it does not expire. To stop it happening again: Settings → Apps → Messages → Audio Messages → Expire → Never (Settings → Messages on older iOS).
- To take it out as a file, press and hold the message and look for Save or Share — on recent iPhones Save puts it in Voice Memos, where Share → Save to Files makes it a file.
- iPhone: press and hold the voice message, tap Forward, then the share button, and choose Save to Files.
- Android: press and hold it, tap Share, and save it to Files or Google Drive. The voice notes are also in your phone’s storage, under Android → media → com.whatsapp → WhatsApp → Media → WhatsApp Voice Notes.
A view-once voice message cannot be saved — that is what it is for.
Messenger and Instagram
Neither app has a button to download a voice message. The dependable way is a screen recording with sound: start the recording, play the message, stop. You get a video file with the voice in it — and that is enough, because a video can be kept as a voice too (see below).
Voice Memos and recorder apps
These are files already, but on one phone. In Voice Memos, open the recording’s menu and choose Share → Save to Files, or turn on iCloud for Voice Memos so a copy lives off the phone.
Anything else
If an app offers no way out, the screen recording with sound works everywhere a message can be played.
Then keep the file safe
- Two copies, two places. A computer and a cloud account — one copy on one phone is how voice messages are lost in the first place.
- Name it. Whose voice, and when: “Grandma – birthday call – 2026.m4a” will still mean something in twenty years.
- Play it once. Check each copy opens and plays before you delete the original.
Keep it as something you can hold
A file in a folder is safe, but nobody hears it.
